Trees across the UK face a growing number of threats from fungal infections, bacterial pathogens and invasive pests. Left unchecked, these diseases can weaken your trees, pose safety risks to your property and even prove fatal. Knowing what to look for gives you the best chance of catching problems early, before they become costly or dangerous.

Why Do Trees Become Diseased?
Trees can fall ill for a range of reasons, and it is rarely down to a single cause. Fungal infections spread through wind, rain and contaminated soil. Bacterial diseases often enter through pruning wounds, storm damage or natural openings in the bark. Insect pests can weaken a tree’s defences and carry pathogens from one host to another.
Environmental stress plays a significant role too. Prolonged drought, waterlogging, soil compaction and pollution all leave trees more vulnerable to infection. Even poor pruning practices, such as cutting at the wrong time of year or making improper cuts, can create entry points for disease.
What Are the Most Common Tree Diseases in the UK?
Several diseases appear time and again across British gardens, parks and woodlands. Here are the ones we encounter most frequently.
Ash Dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus)
One of the most devastating tree diseases in recent UK history, ash dieback is expected to kill around 80% of ash trees nationwide. Symptoms include wilting and premature leaf loss, dark lesions on stems and branches, and progressive dieback in the crown. Unfortunately, there is no cure. Severely affected trees often need to be removed, particularly when they stand near paths, roads or buildings where falling branches could cause harm.
Honey Fungus (Armillaria spp)
Honey fungus is one of the most widespread fungal diseases in British gardens, capable of attacking a broad range of tree and shrub species. Telltale signs include clusters of golden-brown mushrooms appearing at the base of the tree in autumn, white fungal sheets visible beneath the bark, and sudden wilting or death of foliage. No chemical treatment currently exists. Management focuses on removing infected material and improving soil drainage to limit further spread.
Oak Decline
Our native oaks are under pressure like never before. Oak decline is a complex condition involving multiple pathogens and environmental stressors working together. You may notice a thinning canopy, small yellowing leaves, and dark bleeding lesions on the trunk. Reducing stress factors around the tree and consulting a qualified arborist to monitor structural safety are the most effective responses.
Dutch Elm Disease (Ophiostoma novo-ulmi)
This now infamous disease has killed millions of elm trees in the UK over the past 50 years, fundamentally changing parts of our landscape. Spread by elm bark beetles, it causes sudden wilting and yellowing of leaves, brown streaks visible in the sapwood, and dieback starting from the crown. Early detection is vital. Infected branches should be removed and properly disposed of promptly, and severely affected trees may require complete removal.
Bleeding Canker of Horse Chestnut (Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi)
Increasingly common in horse chestnut trees, bleeding canker produces dark, sticky liquid seeping from the trunk, dead patches of bark and gradual canopy dieback. There is no cure available, but minor infections can sometimes be managed through careful pruning and improving the overall health of the tree. Where structural safety is compromised, removal may be the only safe option.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Phytophthora is a soil-borne, fungus-like organism that attacks a wide range of tree species. Its greatest impact in the UK so far has been on larch plantations, leading to thousands of hectares of felling. In gardens, symptoms include yellowing leaves, premature leaf drop and visible root decay. Improving drainage and avoiding overwatering can help, but severely infected trees typically need to be removed.
How Can You Protect Your Trees from Disease?
Taking a proactive approach to tree health can prevent many problems before they take hold:
- Schedule regular inspections. An annual check by a qualified arborist can catch early symptoms that are easy to miss from ground level.
- Prune at the right time. Pruning during the recommended season for each species reduces the risk of creating wounds that invite infection. Incorrect timing can leave trees exposed to fungal and bacterial attack.
- Plant wisely. Choosing species suited to your soil type and local conditions gives trees the strongest possible start. Avoid overcrowding, which increases humidity and encourages fungal growth.
- Monitor for changes. Keep an eye out for sudden shifts in foliage colour, unusual bark markings, fungal growth at the base of trunks or unexplained dieback. Early intervention often saves the tree.
